You are in the best position to ensure you and your family is safe from fire and other emergencies. The list of suggestions below is an excellent starting point toward ensuring your safety at home, at work, in school, or while you're out and about.
The Fire Chief's office also provides fire prevention classes and fire extinguisher training at the Station each month, and would be happy to coordinate a special class for your organization, school or company. Call the Chief's office at 612-2301 for more information or to make arrangements.
Smoke Detectors. Smoke detectors should be installed in every home or living area, at least one per floor. Batteries should be changed twice a year -- a good time to remember to do this is when you change the clocks for Spring Forward in April and Fall Back in October.
Fire Extinguishers. Fire extinguishers are an excellent tool for fighting small fires that may occur in the kitchen, garage/utility rooms or other areas of the home. These are NOT an alternative to calling 9-1-1 if a fire starts, however -- a small fire can rapidly grow in size, putting you and others at risk.
Fire Sprinklers. If installed, test your sprinklers valve at least twice a year, or as mandated by the sprinkler installer's instructions. Wicktonville Township Code also requires fire sprinklers in all new homes built after 1990. This is an additional layer of protection for you, but many insurance companies also provide incentives for sprinklers being present.
Know Your Exits. You should prepare an emergency escape plan from your home, and a backup plan if the path is blocked by debris, smoke or fire. If you have a multi-story home, consider an escape ladder to exit a window and climb safely to the ground. Family members should know where to assemble if you become separated.
Know Your Shut-Off Valves. A wrench should be kept near the gas meter to turn-off the meter in the event of a fire or natural disaster. An emergency wrench, for gas and water meters, is sold at the local hardware store for about $10, and is a handy tool to have on hand for such an occasion. (If the gas is shut off, the Utility Department will turn the meter back on after performing a safety check of the home and gas system.)
